The History of Chocolate

InTruffledTimesBlog

Here are some short videos explaining the history of chocolate.

The cacao tree is native to Meso-America and seems to have first been used 3500 to 4000 years ago.  Believed by the peoples of Mexico to be brought by the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl it was so valuable that in the beginning it was used as currency.

It wasn’t until the 16th Century that cacao and chocolate was introduced to Europe through Spanish explorers returning from the New World.

There is also evidence that cacao was known to the ancient cultures of Ecuador and used in medicine kits of the healers there a thousand years or more before it gradually made its way up the coast to Meso-America.

And check out the short video from SNAkids about how chocolate is made.

Thousands of years ago, the Maya people of Central America believed that chocolate was the food of the gods. The Maya — who helped pioneer cultivation of the cocoa tree, along with the Toltec and Aztec peoples — even used cocoa beans as a form of currency.

Fast forward to today, and chocolate is considered less of a rarity and more of an anytime treat. “Somehow the ancients understood that chocolate was special,” says owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolate Company Jean Thompson in her TEDxBellevueWomen Talk. “Today, chocolate is the inexpensive darling of the candy aisle.” Read more from IDEAS.TED.COM

How Chocolate Can Help Save the Planet

InTruffledTimesBlog

From Scientific American no less.
\”You can count on the fact that chocolate will, as always, be a mainstay of Valentine’s Day. You can also count on the fact that cocoa bean cultivation is bad for the environment—especially for the rain forests of West Africa. That, along with concerns over child labor on cacao plantations is enough to make the conscientious consumer think about giving up chocolate for good.

But what if we could indulge in chocolate without guilt? Or at least, without climate guilt? In fact, we can, because when cocoa is grown sustainably, it can actually help save the world, not destroy it.\” Read more on Scientific American.
